The Community Sporting Event of the Year Award recognises events that unite communities, inspire participation, and create lasting impact beyond the playing field. This year’s finalists have delivered exceptional experiences that showcase the power of sport to bring people together.
Fuel To Go & Play Association Championships | Netball WA
Held over the WA Day long weekend, the Fuel To Go & Play Association Championships is one of WA’s largest community sporting events. In 2025, the event welcomed 318 teams from 48 WA associations and 17 Singaporean teams, with over 4,100 participants competing across 47 divisions. From juniors to masters, and inclusive divisions for boys and all abilities, this event is a celebration of diversity and participation. With talent identification, umpire development, and a West Coast Fever home game experience, the Championships deliver pathways and unforgettable memories for thousands of players and families.
Kimberley 9s Carnival | Purple Hands Foundation
The Kimberley 9s Carnival is more than an AFL 9s tournament, it’s a cultural and community engagement initiative that transforms lives. Held on Cable Beach, the 2025 carnival brought together 492 students from 22 schools across the Kimberley, including remote Aboriginal communities. The event promotes school attendance, wellbeing, and cultural pride, while fostering positive relationships between youth, police, and community organisations. With inclusion pitches, health and cultural workshops, and a unique Student Dining Experience, the Kimberley 9s is a shining example of sport as a vehicle for social change.
Backroads Gravel | The Event Team
Backroads Gravel has become a landmark event in WA’s Mid West, attracting over 1,000 participants in 2025. Combining gravel cycling and running, the event offers distances for all ages and abilities—from family-friendly rides to elite state championships. Beyond the competition, Backroads delivers significant economic and social benefits, injecting nearly $900,000 into the local economy and fostering community pride. With initiatives like Geraldton Bike Fest, charity partnerships, and on-site camping, Backroads is redefining regional sporting events and creating a lasting legacy for health, tourism, and community connection.
