We’re proud to announce Ian Ainger and Craig Baker as this fortnight’s recipients of the WA Local Sporting Stars Volunteer Recognition Program.
Ian has been the driving force behind Southside BMX Club for more than 35 years, dedicating countless hours as President, Track Manager, committee member and race commentator. A Life Member and former BMX racer, Ian has helped shape generations of riders, including his own children and now his grandchildren. Widely regarded as the longest-serving BMX club President in Western Australia, he has overseen a remarkable transformation of the club, leading major projects including a new scoring office, start ramp, viewing areas and $1.2 million clubrooms. Through sponsorship, fundraising and hands-on volunteer work, Ian has rebuilt the club from the ground up and remains the first to arrive and last to leave each race day. His commitment to the sport and support of BMX clubs across the state have left a lasting legacy.
Craig Baker has devoted more than two decades to athletics, giving generously of his time to support athletes, coaches and communities. Since moving to Broome, he has strengthened local athletics as Head Coach of Broome Athletics, mentoring volunteer coaches, coordinating events and helping develop the next generation of participants. Beyond athletics, Craig has also volunteered extensively in community football, coaching young players, leading interschool training sessions and helping build confidence, skills and commitment among developing athletes. Through his popular “coach the coaches” sessions, Craig empowers others to step into volunteer coaching roles, expanding the capacity and impact of community sport. His leadership, generosity and passion continue to enrich sport across the Broome region.
The WA Local Sporting Stars Volunteer Recognition Program celebrates a broad range of volunteer contributions, including youth leadership, long-standing service, inclusive participation, innovation and all-round support within sporting communities.
Nominations for future recipients remain open, with winners selected by a dedicated panel throughout the program. Community members are encouraged to nominate the volunteers who make a difference in their local clubs and help keep sport strong across Western Australia. Recognise your Volunteers here.
