Rhys King
MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING PROJECT MANAGER
Rhys has joined SportWest with an enthusiasm and drive to deliver positive mental health outcomes for the wider WA sports community and especially support SSA staff and sport administrators. Stepping into a Project Management role has been an exciting challenge to deliver an initiative that will support community sport participants, promote positive mental health and wellbeing behaviours and help destigmatise talking about mental health.
Rhys is a former Health and Physical Education teacher that fell into sport administration, working at RugbyWA as the Education Manager to follow his passion for coaching. Prior to joining SportWest, Rhys also worked as the Operations Manager for RugbyWA. While education and training will always be a passion, moving into management roles and now project management has been a rewarding experience.
Mental health and wellbeing is an incredibly important issue that will likely effect everyone at sometime, in one way or another. With funding, support and interest at all time highs in this area, it is important that community sport is helped to act in positive and meaningful ways. The True Sport – Mental Health and Wellbeing project will roll out mid-2023, as a powerful first step to support community sport organisations deal with mental health issues.
On a personal level, Rhys is a rugby enthusiast who toys with the idea of playing again but realistically sticks to the gym these days. He typically prefers to participate rather than spectate and is keen to have a go at any sport that doesn’t involve long distances.
