SportWest and rebel Sport are pleased to announce the recipient of our rebel Community Sport Volunteer for the season of Spring, Shaun Barnett.

Actively engaged in the volleyball community through various avenues, Shaun serves as the President of the LGBTQIA+ Volleyball Club within WA’s volleyball Club Land, namely the Perth Scorpions Volleyball Club (PSVC).

Notably, during the months of September to November, Shaun played a pivotal role in orchestrating PSVC’s inaugural Junior Camp for designed for secondary school aged students 12-17 years to develop the fundamentals of volleyball in a fun and exciting way. Additionally, he led the execution of the Club’s first ever Awards Nights on October 21, and his unwavering commitment was further evident as he accompanied close to two tables of fellow PSVC members to the VWA Awards Night.

Shaun’s passion for inclusivity within the volleyball and LGBTQIA+ community shines through, exemplified by his active involvement in promoting volleyball at events such as the Pride Fair Day on November 12, 2023 and Pride Parade on November 25, 2023, and the collaborative effort with Volleyball WA in the planning, setup, and execution of the Pride Cup on November 19, 2023. Beyond his roles in the PSVC, Shaun is a Level 2 State Referee. His dedication to refereeing reached new heights as he was invited to join Volleyball WA’s Referee Committee on November 6, in which he accepted. Moreover, in the same month, Shaun was selected as Referee Supervisor at the upcoming Australian Volleyball Schools Cup on the Gold Coast.

It is undeniable that Shaun’s multifaceted contributions significantly enrich the Club’s landscape. Furthermore, his collaboration with Volleyball WA, coupled with his unwavering commitment to personal and professional development, particularly in the realm of refereeing, places Shaun in a league of his own.
